What’s Medium-Dark Roast?

Coffee roasted to a medium-dark level, typically described as full bodied, is rich, chestnut brown in color and some natural oils can be seen on the surface of the beans. Most of the acidic bite or brightness you can taste in light and medium roast coffee gives way to deeper flavor notes in medium-dark coffees. Medium-dark roasts have a characteristically sweet aftertaste that balance well with any bitterness that might appear when going into the darker scale. Brewing Techniques

Medium dark roast coffee tastes great using a variety of brewing methods, some notable low cost mentions are french press and cold brew. Cold brew takes 12-16 hours depending on if you are leaving the coffee/water immersion out over night or placing the coffee/water mix in the refrigerator. French press will produce a fantastic product in 2-3 minutes with a coarse grind. Aeropress also deserves a mention as you can choose between an espresso like shot, cold brew or a cup of coffee. Aeropress strains all the coffee grounds better than a French Press, so if you don’t like a few grounds at the bottom of your cup as can happen with French Press check out an Aeropress.

Grind Size For Medium-Dark Roast Coffee:

The question is, what do you want to drink and how are you going to brew your coffee. Grind size can be altered to get the taste you want in combination with your brew method. For instance espresso-fine grind for an espresso shot or drink may be desirable for this roast. While you can do an espresso pull on all roasts, starting with a medium dark roast will be slightly more forgiving than a dark roast. Grind size for medium dark coffee can fall anywhere between coarse for french press and fine for an espresso pull. Look at a medium-coarse grind for a Chemex, a medium grind for drip or pour-over, and a medium-fine for Aeropress. Need a visual? Click here.
